PDF/X-1a Guidelines |
|
|
A PostScript document is created from the native application file prior to preparing the final PDF/X-1a file. Please adhere to the following guidelines in file preparation:
-
Set native application files in portrait mode at 100% of size with no rotations. Include trapping.
-
Trim, bleed and center marks should be included in the file but kept outside the bleed area. Keep live matter 1/2” from trim edge.
-
Images must be SWOP standard CMYK at 300 dpi with a total area density of 300%. (RGB, LAB, INDEX, JPEG or LZW compressed images are not acceptable).
-
Use only PostScript Type 1 fonts. (No TrueType fonts). Do not use type styling for font attributes such as italic, bold, etc.
-
All high-resolution images must be included and all fonts embedded.
-
If creating a PostScript file from QuarkXpress use the Universal PPD available for download from DDAP at www.ddap.org.
-
Use PDF/X-1a compliant software such as Adobe Acrobat Professional Version 6 or InDesign CS (Version 3.0) or enlist a prepress vendor or on-line service to create a PDF/X-1a file from the native application file. For a list of service providers visit www.ddap.org.

3. Other Digital Files Format Accepted: InDesign 2.0 or later |
|
Native Files Guidelines |
|
|
-
All design elements (images, fonts, vector art) must be included when supplying native files.
-
All images must be saved as a tiff or eps in CMYK format. (RGB, LAB, INDEX, JPEG or LZW compressed images are not acceptable)
-
Images or logos copied from websites are not suitable for printing.
-
Avoid using font sizes below 6 pt, “hairline” rules, nested eps into an eps or stylized fonts for attributes such as italic, bold, etc.
-
Macintosh and Windows platform accepted.
|
|
Note about non-conforming files: If an ad is supplied in any other file format besides PDF/X-1a, InDesign or Quark or if it needs to be resized, reworked or corrected, a production charge will be added to the final invoice per the ad production rates found on each publication’s applicable rate sheet. |

4. Proofing Requirements |
-
A +SWOP-certified color proof is required for all color ads.
-
Proofs must be representative of the supplied file at actual size.
-
Non-SWOP proofs (inkjet, laserjet, etc.) will be used for content only.
-
Any special printing instructions should be clearly indicated on the supplied proof.
-
We cannot be held responsible for matching color without a SWOP-certified color proof.
|
|
+SWOP-certified digital proofing formats include the following: Kodak Approval Digital Color Proofing system, Fuji Final Proof, Iris Pro SWOP and Dupont Digital Waterproof. For information on SWOP standards or a complete list of certified proofing systems, please visit www.swop.com. Failure to provide a SWOP-certified proof (either supplied or purchased) shall serve as advertiser’s acknowledgement and acceptance of industry-standard “run of press” ad color reproduction. |
|
|
|
Note about proofs: When off-press color proofs are made in conformance to the manufacturer’s SWOP Application Data Sheet, it does not necessarily mean a perfect match to a SWOP press proof has been achieved. In addition, it should be recognized that different off-press proofing systems might not perfectly match each other. Ads will print at the industry standard as exact color can never be guaranteed. |
