My very first review!
I read Hughes’ trilogy years ago and I really enjoyed the books. When I happened to scroll through IMDB and found SILO, I was immediately intrigued. I see somewhat mixed opinions and I can relate to some of them. Here’s my take on the first season. First of all, I love dystopian literature!
It is not an adaptation in the sense that it follows the plot
The dystopian genre offers a unique psychological perspective on human nature in hypothetical scenarios. My fondness for the triology solidified because Hughes managed to develop Orwellian ideas within a hypothesis that is relevant to the modern world. Mapping the development of the human psyche in dystopian scenarios is a challenging task. I think Hughes did a wonderful job, SILO captures most of these aspects in a refreshing way. It is based on the books, but of course has to adapt to the viewers in a fast-paced world.
The acting performances of the main characters are phenomenal
Still, the series manages to capture the atmosphere of an isolated society. Unlike the superficial storytelling of other series, “SILO” offers a wonderful mix of character development and atmospheric focus. The only problem I have with the series is the lack of atmospheric development. They spend a lot of screen time chasing and capturing Juliette. They lack the atmospheric development of the silo as a society.
