Twelve years after his escape, professional criminal Trojan returns to Berlin. A valuable painting is about to be stolen in the city. However, the carefully planned robbery soon gets out of hand. During the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, spectators saw how professional criminal Trojan (Misel MATICEVIC) from IM SCHATTEN (2010) had to leave the capital indefinitely. The Trojan still operates quite analogously: old-fashioned crimes such as the theft of tangible objects such as watches, cash and paintings. Without connections to the mafia or clan structure, a lone warrior, only occasionally and out of necessity on a team! When a putsch in the Ruhr does not go as planned, Trojan must return to Berlin to take advantage of his old contacts (Marie-Lou SELLEM). And indeed: Trojan, together with three colleagues (Tim SEYFI, Marie LEUENBERGER, Bilge BINGÜL), succeeds in stealing a valuable painting by Caspar David FRIEDRICH. But then problems begin with the mysterious client Viktor (Alexander FEHLING)… At the BERLINALE 2010, IM SCHATTEN, directed by the Braunschweig director Thomas ARSLAN, was like a long-awaited genre bomb. A gripping genre film shot in Germany, told using the cinematic resources of the Berlin School. Extremely exciting, with sparse dialogue and explosive moments of violence! ARSLAN continues this seemingly perfectly with VERBRANNTE ERDE. Gangster films are still rare in German cinema. With cold precision, the images of cinematographer Reinhold VORSCHNEIDER (also IM SCHATTEN) tell the story of people living in the shadow of Germany. Dark places, in the shadow of nearby sights and yet far from the perception of the police and the normal population. Berlin appears as a co-protagonist and opponent of the film heroes. The subdued music by Norwegian composer Ola FLOTTUM (THE WORST MAN IN THE WORLD, 2021) contributes greatly to this tense atmosphere. It shows the capital you know and not yet. Many viewers will be able to recognize this urban development with all its streets from their own surroundings. Creepy places very close to us: scorched earth in the shadows! Misel MATICEVIC (BEFORE CRIME / BABYLON BERLIN) is again very convincing as the Trojan, of whom we will probably see more (Thomas ARSLAN is planning a kind of Trojan trilogy ). GERMAN FILM AWARD nominee Marie Lou SELLEM (nominated for KNOCHEN UND NAMEN / BONES AND NAMES in 2024) is there as an icy mediator. But GERMAN FILM PRIZE winner Alexander FEHLING (winner in 2019 for DAS ENDE DER WAHRHEIT / THE END OF TRUTH) is terrifyingly good and doesn’t really have to hide from classic villains like Klaus KINSKI and Michael FASSBENDER. Thomas ARSLAN doesn’t want to spend as much time on the third film in the Trojan trilogy as he did in 2010-2024. It’s still exciting!
